British Equestrian can confirm that athlete Gareth Hughes tested positive for Covid-19 at the ECCO FEI World Championships in Herning, Denmark. Pre-prepared team protocols which align with the FEI recommended guidance and the Herning Organising Committee were immediately instigated and the situation managed. Gareth presented with mild symptoms which were managed with our athlete health lead and he felt able to ride. Regular testing plus full hygiene and distancing measures are in place within the British team and will continue to be observed for the remainder of our time in Denmark.

Chef de Mission Richard Waygood said; “In our preparations for Herning, we worked on protocols to facilitate a covid-positive team member to minimise risk to their others in line with current requirements in Denmark and FEI recommendations. This planning has proved invaluable in managing the situation. We had a very proactive meeting with the FEI this morning and jointly agreed special protocols for Gareth for the remainder of the competition.

“During the medal ceremony, we accept that the correct protocols were not followed due to the emotional excitement of the ceremony. This was in the heat of the moment and we apologise for any consternation this may have caused.”

As agreed with the FEI, Gareth will continue to wear a mask and socially distance when not riding as a precaution.
