Charlotte Fry

Rider Profile

Name:
Charlotte Fry
Location:
Den Hout, Netherlands

Lottie was born into dressage – her late mother, Laura Fry, had competed at the 1992 Olympics and was a European team silver medallist before going on to run a successful dressage training yard at home in Yorkshire. Lottie was sat in the corner during lessons and training most days and was riding a horse before she could walk!

Lottie says that her whole life revolves around horses and dressage! She had daily training from her mum throughout her childhood, on small hairy ponies up to Grand Prix horses, so she was very lucky!

From 2012 Lottie trained with Carl Hester, who rode on the 1992 Olympic team with her mum, who helped her to secure a place at Van Olst Horses in Holland, working and training with five-time Danish Olympian Anne Van Olst. Lottie continues to be based there.

Lottie moved to the Netherlands in 2014 (but says she still cannot get to grips with the Dutch language) and has never looked back. She’s had the most amazing opportunities, ridden incredible horses and absolutely loves her job! She rides around 10–12 horses a day, from just-broken three-year-olds up to Grand Prix horses.

Whenever Lottie gets a little free time, she loves to go back to England to visit family and friends. This is usually around Christmas time when it's a little quieter with the competitions and stallion shows. She eats as much English food as possible and her trip is never complete without a big roast dinner; she really believes that the Dutch don't know what they're missing!

Her first senior team call up came in 2019 when she was just 23 having secured a trio of medals at the FEI U25 European Championships with Dark Legend where the team finished fourth in Rotterdam. Her next team appearance was Tokyo in 2021 with the young expressive stallion Everdale who she jointly owns with the Van Olsts and they made a lasting impression, helping Britain to team bronze as well as finishing 13th in the Freestyle. In Hagen weeks later for the European Championships, they put their Olympic experience to use and bettered thier scores, finishing fifth in all three tests, playing a key role in the team's silver medal and scoring 84%+ in the Freestyle.

In 2022 Lottie joined the team in Herning for the World Championships, scoring a new international Grand Prix personal best and enough to give Britain the team silver medal, qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Lottie went on to score +80% in the Grand Prix Special and +90% in the Freestyle with her 'best of British' themed playlist, securing her both individual gold medals at the championships.
