David’s eventing career started in the Avon Vale Pony Club, where he was a regular on all the teams at championship level. He rode in his first British Eventing competition in March 2007, when he was just 14, and quickly moved up the ranks through Juniors and Young Riders, winning team gold, silver, bronze and an individual Bronze. He was also national Under-18 champion in 2011 and national Under-21 champion in 2012.
In 2014, David made his Senior Nations Cup debut and was awarded the Goldman Cup for best Under-21 rider of the season. In 2018, he finished third in the British Novice Championships at the Festival of British Eventing.
David rode his first CCI5* at Pau in 2018 and has been competing consistently at the level ever since. He competed at Badminton for the first time in 2022, finishing in 6th and being awarded the Laurence Rook Trophy, which given to the highest-placed British rider who has not previously completed the event, followed by 4th at Pau later that year. In 2023, he finished 8th at Kentucky and was runner-up at Burghley, finishing on his dressage score – one of only nine combinations to achieve that since 2008. He also received the Avebury Award for the best cross-country round.
David is married to showjumper Charlotte Doel, with whom he runs his yard near Lacock in Wiltshire.
